<image:caption>This is one of my favorite things about exploring down here, the off road element. Via miles of two track roads, rock gardens, washed out dry creek crossings and towering cardon cactus we were closing in on this new beach access. And it was plain to see this beach was not often visited by vehicle, at least not by those without 4x4 vehicle, nerves of steel and skill behind the wheel. Sections of the road were steep and whooped out enough that careful line selection was required even for our short wheel base jeep to crawl up and over.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As we left the hardpan desert terrain behind and entered the transition to beach sand and dunes, sections were very soft and rutted. We stopped to air down the tires to expand our treads footprint and add floatation. A balance of throttle control and momentum delivered us the final miles to reach the end of the road and an ideal parking place overlooking miles of white sandy beach.</image:caption>

<image:caption>With each trip down, I'd set expectations with a healthy dose of skeptical optimism, comparing outcomes to steelhead trips. Well, maybe winter run steelhead trips. Meaning I'd hope not to land the standard fish-a-day, but simply for a shot at a fish a day, and landing a single (non juvenile) fish for the trip. I knew how to keep my dreams in check. And I knew my attitude about HOW I wanted to fish was not aiding my odds.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From the 2015 season, “No sooner had I taken my old 7mm to hand and put a round in the barrel, did I sidehill into the sagebrush pocket to find exactly what I was looking for. Following an hour or so of negotiating the topography and swirling wind I gathered my composure and executed a hundred yard shot that put my best buck to date into our freezer!”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Essays - Episode 7 "A Win for Dad"</image:title>
<image:caption>Still far out of range, I watched the buck disappear into a fold of terrain. He was now off the private and onto beloved public land. An hour later he had not emerged so I opted for a stalk that would deliver me to a close-range vantage into the hidden gully. As I approached the crest above the buck, I slowed to a creep with my rifle mid-shoulder. The day was calm as a candle flame without a breath of wind, and I could hear each pebble crunch under my slow-motion footsteps. A short distance below me I heard a light rustling, and knew that had to be the buck. I peered through the tops of brush and spotted antler tips tilting back and fourth.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Essays - Episode 7 "A Win for Dad"</image:title>
<image:caption>As with my archery bull last month, I shook these thoughts out of my head and reassured myself that the shot was solid. I strapped my pack back on, chambered another round and set my gaze to the line of tracks unraveling away from me. When I reached the farthest visible track a splash of red practically leapt from the sage. "I knew it!!!!" I proclaimed to myself.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Essays - Episode 7 "A Win for Dad"</image:title>
<image:caption>A short distance later the trail revealed all the signs of a buck hit hard and whirling out of control down the mountain! I could plainly see where the buck had died mid-air, lost his legs, and fell into a tumble. The tracks told the story as clearly as if I'd witnessed it in real time. I paused and took a knee on the slope knowing my dandy buck was expired somewhere right below me. For so many years I'd dreamt of savoring a moment like this, and I soaked it all in. Seconds later I spotted the fella, clearly at peace and waiting to be claimed.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I froze in my tracks and stared carefully, watching for any movement. I raised my binoculars and studied his form, a silhouette against the snow, the objective of so much effort, preparation and hope. And now, from a living breathing creature of natural perfection, the bull laid still. Spirit and wind now vacant and void from the massive bulk of his body. His rack now still, left antler stamped into the snow, anchored to the ground like a shipwreck in the distance, vivid on the horizon of a weather beaten, but never forgotten beach.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Essays - Episode 6 "Shipwreck"</image:title>
<image:caption>My eyes were scanning fiercely, like a pair of spotlights in the fog, magnets swinging and prodding every visible feature in front of me, hungry to lock onto antler or hide. I looked ahead of me on the trial, trying to confirm tracks or blood as far ahead as possible to give me the earliest chance of spotting anything that could be the bull. I took a few more steps around a thick young fir tree that revealed a long- straight stretch of trail. At the end of this section of trail, 80 yards away, a 6x6 bull elk lay on the ground.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Essays - Episode 6 "Shipwreck"</image:title>
<image:caption>What a majestic creature. He was a herd bull earlier that day, maybe this rutting season for his first time. He'd survived what was the toughest winter in a generation here in the mountain west. Who knows how many encounters with predators he'd seen over his time in this vast and remote country. This bull was a part of this land, he was a character, an individual personality in these mountains and voice in the autumn skies. Thinking of him as all these things is one of the ways I want to honor this animal. It's something that just feels like the right thing to do, like these acknowledgements give his life and death a legacy that I'm honored to share, a gift that I'm humbled to receive.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Essays - Episode 6 "Shipwreck"</image:title>
<image:caption>Walking up on a dead animal is always different. With elk, sheer body size is always striking. There is an immediate sizing up of what you'd expected from your previous observations. Usually there is ground shrinkage, I don't think antlers ever look as big close up as they do floating gracefully atop a critters head. There is no denying, sometimes a harvest is nothing but sad. It can even bring to surface a questioning- if what you did was right- defensible or justified. It can bring a sense of regret, loss or the feeling of taking something - a life that was not yours to take. How are those feelings processed and resolved?</image:caption>

<image:caption>This bull is only one of what I know are countless that hunters take home each year - to admire and be proud of. To share photos, meat and memories with friends. These are the stories that are told to our kiddo's, just as so many of us can recall how grandparents or old timers re-lived their own cherished memories in stories to us, which in turn inspired dreams for many of us as kids.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Essays - Episode 6 "Shipwreck"</image:title>
<image:caption>This bull represented so much to me personally. He challenged my skills, composure, toughness and perseverance, while in the end providing an accomplishment I'll never forget. The weight of his meat crushed my shoulders, wobbled my legs and blistered my feet, tearing hot pain with each step, thousands of times over on the pack trips out. His rack and skull will occupy a physical space in our home, and draw the gaze and admiration from myself and friends. He will feed my newborn son, my wife, our friends and I over years to come. He has become the star of this story that I share now with you, and will share with my son. I believe that even if it takes a little reminder or shift in perspective, taking time and finding ways of appreciating every harvest we make will only add to those experiences and satisfaction of success, and truthfully, the failures alike.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In my experience the problem with large pools of blood on the ground is that following those areas the blood trail is almost always several notches reduced in blood drops to track. The same was bearing true in this case, for over the next hundred yards the trail was becoming harder and harder to follow. While staring at the ground and pointing from drop to drop, the tracks led right past a decayed and chalky-white mule deer shed.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A little ways further we came upon the skull of a bull elk, years ago likely taken by a hunter, as the top cap and antlers had been notched out with a saw. A dragon fly was parked on the flaky white bone, no doubt eagerly awaiting the warming morning sun to reach it's ironic perch.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I've always believed common knowledge that a mortally hit animal will go down hill, and this bull had not dropped a foot. In fact we were now far up canyon from the hit, entering areas now where several inches of show remained in the shade. A saving grace. For as we entered the dark timbered area, the bulls tracks were effortless to follow in the show. The frequency of blood had dropped drastically, however was now at least totally obvious as a few single drops laid next to every few hoof prints. Some places there would be a scattering of drops where he had paused.</image:caption>

<image:caption>While passing through an opening in the trees, (an area the sun had melted dry) another bright kind of shine caught my eye. Not the glossy red my eyes had become accustomed to spotting, but obsidian dark and with a shade of almost blue. I bent down knowing exactly what I was looking at, and with perhaps the first fingers in thousands of years, I lifted a near perfect arrowhead from the soil.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I admired the piece and the crafting of the finely serrated edge work, which as I inspected, showed what I though to be signs of wear, where it had once been lodged against bone and flesh. Another bowhunter. Perhaps another blood trail from eons ago. What had this arrow been lodged in? Did it bring the result of security via harvest? How many times had it been used, and by how many individuals over the corse of it's practical lifespan? Was it lost in an animal or errant in it's path and left to fall and never be again be found, until now.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Essays - Episode 4 "Another Bowhunter"</image:title>
<image:caption>As my shadow and I moved along the sagebrush slope, the grade steepened, and small patches of snow remained in sparsely shaded patterns of the ground. Suddenly my eyes sprang ahead and my spirit came alive again. On a small patch of snow a splattering of blood confirmed I was once again (or still) on the bulls trail. I looked ahead and could see progressively more snow in the direction we were headed and I began scanning the small spots of snow for blood. My pace quickened as every 20 yards or so I spotted blood, and it seemed as if it was flowing pretty good again.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My season was officially underway the second week of September when I was able to sneak out for a preliminary solo outing. This would my first opportunity to see these new areas in person and get a real sense if they'd hunt as well as it seemed they would from the computer screen. I strapped on my pack and put my body through a hard core pre-season scrimmage, covering over twenty miles and gobs of elevation getting a sense of the country. I was not disappointed! Although the season was open, my objective was to explore as many drainages as possible and gain understanding of where Ian, Adam and I should invest in our week long hunt later in the season.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I admired the evidence of an elaborate beaver complex that had years ago flooded what was once was a good sized aspen grove. All the trees had died and since fallen into what nature had transformed into a meadow. The dam had long ago blown out and no beavers had since undergone reconstruction efforts. Just portions of the old dam remained in the deforested creek bottom.</image:caption>

<image:caption>He was a hell of a bull, with main beams that extended will above the significant hump in his back as he fed. He tilted his head back and bugled casually into the gray morning light. I had taken a knee in the sagebrush and captured all this on video. I didn't see any other elk with him at first. I reached behind my head and removed my grunt tube that rides like a stove pipe out the top of my back pack. From this distance I could bugle back at him and get a read whether he wanted to rumble, or preferred to keep his morning on the calmer side of things. I plucked a diaphragm call from the zippered pocket on my left arm, and placed it on my tongue. I put the tube under my arm, pointing it downward and behind me. I pressed my mouth against the end like a bagpipe player does. With tight and controlled pressure from my own diaphragm, I pushed a careful stream of high pressure air between the tip of my tongue and the stretched latex of the call. Manipulating the sounds to scale from an ultra high pitch beginning into a gentle wave of tones, the air from my lungs came to life, magnified and reverberating by the acoustic qualities of the grunt tube.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Just about to walk away from the truck on the first day of a new area, a bugle broke the silence. Several hundred yards across the canyon I eventually spotted this bull with a few cows. I was able to zoom way in and get this photo. A few minutes later as I was making my way down the steep canyon, a whole bunch of crashing ruckus sounds grabbed my attention. I watched as this bull and his cows absolutely hauled ass away and over the next horizon. “Something’s after them!” I said to myself. I put my glasses on the last spot I saw the herd run through and sure enough, about a minute later I watch a large cougar leap through the opening in the trees. “Wow!” what a welcome to this new area and the 2017 season!</image:caption>

With a finer focus on the experiences shared in the wild with friends than seeking trophy animals for sport, we head to the backcountry each September. Come along as we share a few highlights from over the years that we have been nothing short of fortunate to call memories.</image:caption>
